“Amerikansk blodkake”

Langpanne:

300 g smør smeltes
2 kopper vann

4 kopper sukker
4 kopper hvetemel
8 toppede ss kakao
2 ts vaniljesukker

1 kopp kulturmelk
2 ts natron

4 sammenpiskede egg

180 grader 20-30 min

Glasur:
Smelt to plater sjokolade (Koke-, Dronning-sjokolade, etc) i vannbad, miks det så sammen med litt sterk kaffe, smør og melis til passende konsistens. Jo mer smør og melis, jo mer “kremete”. Jo mer sjokolade, jo mer “glasur”.

1) Smelt smør og ha oppi vann.
2) Bland det tørre.
3) Ha oppi smør.
4) Bland melk og natron. Ha oppi deigen.
5) Pisk egg og ha oppi resten.
6) Stek midt i ovnen.
7) Vent med glasuren til kaken er avkjølt.

Functional food - and beyond!

You have probably heard the phrase functional food. In Norway, the government have quite strict rules of what modifications are allowed to food and beverage. I don’t know the details, but so far I’ve only seen orange juice with artificially added calcium, milk with vitamin D, yoghurt with the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), etc.

One of my colleagues in the protein engineering lab, our resident super star (as in music), Lasse Fredriksen, is taking this a step further. His master thesis will aim towards finding a way to use one of these lactobacillus bacteria as vaccine carriers to our intestines, where our immune system will create antibodies, hopefully giving us immune resistance to the specified disease. And all you ladies out there, the vaccine he will try to incorporate is against the HPV type 16! (Associcated with cervical cancer.) Interesting stuff. I’m sure the future will bring loads of these specialised functional modifications. Maybe even directly linked against your own, personal, genome.

Eplekake

Ingredienser:
Rund form 22 cm i diameter

3 egg
150 g sukker
150 g smør
150 g hvetemel
1 ts bakepulver
4-5 epler
2 ss sukker
1-2 ts kanel
1/2 dl hakkede nøtter

Fremgangsmåte:
Pisk eggedosis av egg og sukker, ha i smeltet smør og hvetemel/bakepulver vekselvis. Fordel deigen utover i formen. Skrell eplene og del dem i båter. Fordel dem over deigen. Dryss kanel og hakkede nøtter over. Stek ved 180°C i ca 30 minutter. Serveres varm med krem til.
